Conceptualizing the personal outcomes of information
J. Kari
Information Research: an international electronic journal , 2007,
Abstract: Introduction. This paper conceptualizes the outcomes of information as an analytical construct that synthesizes different understandings of information use. The article focuses on the perspective of the individual person. Method. The discussion is primarily based on peer-reviewed articles and monographs in the whole field of information science. The items were normally selected from the Library and Information Science Abstracts database by the keywords 'outcomes', 'uses' and 'effects' of information. Analysis. Outcome of information is first defined as anything that ensues from the individual's assimilation of a message. The outcomes are then analysed hierarchically by dividing them into categories which are further divided into subcategories, until a concrete enough level is reached. Results. The main types of information outcome are information use and effect of information, and their most prominent common dimension is apparently mental vs. physical outcomes. As a result of the scrutiny, a taxonomy of information outcomes is presented in a conceptual model. Conclusion. The model is also a conceptual map of the research area, and indicates a certain imbalance in our knowledge of information outcomes. The model is detailed enough to enable a deductive mode of inquiry, but inductive approaches ought also to be cultivated.

rebetennelser hos barn – "alle har noen, men gutter har flest"

Norsk Epidemiologi , 2009,
Kv rner KJ. Otitis media in children. Nor J Epidemiol 1999; 9 (2): 123-127. ENGLISH SUMMARY Otitis media refers to an infection or inflammation of the middle ear cavity that also affects the eustachian tube and the mastoid cells. Otitis media is almost always caused by an ascending pathology of the epithelial and subepithelial layers of the middle ear mucoperiostium. This paper firstly describes the classification and distribution of otitis media. Next, using Norwegian data, host related risk factors for otitis media are discussed, particularly focusing on gender differences.
Global analysis of nuclear PDFs - latest developments
Kari J. Eskola
Physics , 2012,
Abstract: In this review talk I discuss the latest developments in the DGLAP-based global analysis of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs), focusing on the recent EPS09, nCTEQ and DSSZ global fits. I also briefly review the recent analysis for assigning a spatial dependence to the globally analysed nPDFs, resulting in the new sets EPS09s and EKS98s ("s" for spatial). With these, one can now compute nuclear hard-process cross sections and estimate their nPDF-originating uncertainties in different centrality classes for the first time consistently with the global nPDF fits.

Abstract: In this talk, I will discuss the predictions of the first results from RHIC: the charged particle multiplicity $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$, its centrality dependence and the elliptic flow $v_2$.

4-Amino- and 4-Hydroxycyclohexane-1,1-dicarboxylic Acid Peptides
Makarevi?, J.,kari, V.
- , 1981,
Abstract: Sa?etak 4-Amino-, 4-oxo-, and 4-hydroxy-cyclohexane-1 ,1-dicarboxylic acids have been inserted into di- and tri-peptides containing glycine, L-phenylalanine, L-cyclohexylalanine, and L-tyrosine. The geometries of 4-c-(IX A) and 4-t-(IX B) benzamidocyclohexane- r-1-carboxy-1-carbonyl-L-phenylalanine methyl esters and 4-c- -(XXIII A) and 4-t-(XXIII B) benzoxycyclohexane-r-1 -carbomethoxy- 1-carbonyl-L-cyclohexylalanine methyl esters were confirmed by their NMR spectra and intramolecular cyclisations of the cis isomers. The ring opening of 2-oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octan-3-one- 4-carbonyl-L-cyclohexylalanine methyl ester (XXIV) in methanolic hydrochloric acid afforded 4-c-hydroxycyclohexane-r- 1- -carbomethoxy-1-carbonyl-L-cyclohexylalanine methyl ester (XXI A) which on benzoylation was converted into the product identical with the isomer (XXIII A)
Health behavior after intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy  [PDF]

Health (Health) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/health.2013.51013
Abstract:

Background: Pregnancy is an opportunity to adopt favorable health behaviors. We studied whether intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) promotes favorable health behavior in later life. Design: A prospective controlled cohort study. The method was a questionnaire survey in 2010 among 575 women with ICP and 1374 controls, all having delivered between the years 1969 and 1988 in Tampere University Hospital in Finland. Questionnaires were sent to 544 ICP patients and 1235 controls. Responses were received from 1178 (response rate 66.2%). The main outcome measures concerning recent or current health behavior were smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, body mass index (BMI) and special diet. Results: Current smoking was less common in the ICP group than among controls (10.5% vs 15.7%, p = 0.017). Assessed by smoking pack years there was a similar difference: in the ICP group 11.7% of women had at least 10 smoking pack years compared to 18.0% of the controls (p = 0.006). Recent alcohol consumption did not separate the two groups. The groups did not differ as to reported physical activity assessed in MET units. Fewer ICP women had had BMIs of 30 or more during pregnancy compared with controls (18.8% vs 25.1%, p = 0.023). In other points of life the BMI differences were not statistically significant. Weight-loss diet and gallbladder diet were more common in the ICP group (6.3% vs 3.6%, p = 0.044, and 3.0% vs 1.3%, p = 0.038). Conclusions: Having developed ICP two to four decades earlier seemed to constitute an effective intervention for smoking habits but not for other aspects of health behavior.

Prospects of Jet Tomography Using Hard Processes inside a Soft Medium
Renk, Thorsten;Eskola, Kari J.
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology , 2007,
Abstract: The term 'tomography' is commonly applied to the idea of studying properties of a medium by the modifications this medium induces to a known probe propagating through it. In the context of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, rare high transverse momentum (p_T) processes taking place alongside soft bulk-matter production can be viewed as a tomographic probe as long as the energy scales are such that the modification of high p_T processes can be dominantly ascribed to interactions with the medium during the propagation of partons. Various high p_T observables have been suggested for tomography, among them hard single hadron suppression, dihadron correlations and gamma-hadron correlations. In this paper, we present a model study of a number of different observables within the same calculational framework to assess the sensitivity of the observables to different properties of the medium and discuss the prospects of obtaining tomographic information.
